I bet that cord is for a Focuspot, the little light which attaches to the top of your rangefinder and, when plugged in and activated, shines through the rangefinder to project 2 images. When those images meet on a subject, you are focused on it. I've never thought to check the dimensions of those posts before. If your cord plugs straight into something, instead of ending at a right angle plug, then most likely that's what you have. Of course, the question then is whether you have a focuspot attached? It might have been removed before you got it.
