Somewhere on this site was a list of the various types of roll film holders made by Graflex. I would like to get a roll back and wanted to be 100$ sure which type is appropriate for my 4x5 Crown Graphic (Graflok). |

By 'roll film back' you mean 120/220 ? If thats the case you dont have to be limited to original. I have a 4x5 crown and use a 'Da Yi' I got off Ebay. It does 64.5,66, 69 and 612. The 6X12 is full width. It just Snaps in and you lock it. fits the same place as the back. They aren't that expensive, but there are some others out there that go wider. I have seen a 617 (or was it 618?)and a 6x 24 or thereabouts. These are considerably more expensive. I have it in mind to try to build one myself, but the the 6x12 and its inserts for smaller format is around the $200 mark I think. Maybe less. I think i paid less for mine. Check Ebay.

A couple thing to think about regarding Graflex holders...
I have a couple of the older knob wind 120-4x5 backs (6x9 and 6x6). Being knob wind they are not very fast as far as film advance but they work OK. For my smaller Graphics I have the lever wind later model types, and these being the more common camera I would take out with me, I enjoy the faster advance they offer.
Also, if you can determine that the holders you try to purchase have the proper dark slides this will be good. Over the last couple years I have received a couple very nice holders and a some that are not. There are a couple diffrent types of insert floating around for the later model lever wind and sometimes these get mismatched with the holder. Some have a raised bump and some don't. The earlier knob winds do not have this feature. I am under the impression that this was an added attempt at making the insert line up more easily with the holder upon loading. Ultimately it prevents interchangeability with some inserts.
Also, Spacing overlap is very common with the Graflex holders. It ussually is not more than slight, but keep this in mind when looking at Graflex holders. It can be remedied in some cases but I find it to be more common than not on a couple late frames and occasionally on the early frames. Dissasembly and cleaning and relubing, and proper film loading can help this sometimes....
anyway, good luck with the search |

I obtained a 6x7 (RH10) Graphic rollholder for my Century, and it didn't have a dark slide. In this case, though, a dark slide from a 2x3 sheet film holder fit OK and I'm using that combination to this day. It's a tad smaller in the short dimension than a "standard" #1432 dark slide, but I've had no problems with light leaks. |

Henry,
No problems in direct sunlight? I thought to try that a couple times, but found the double sided holder and also press film holder slides to be thinner, shorter, and generally Lucy-Goosey so avoided the issue.

primus96,
The older holders were Graphic 22 for 2 1/4x 2 1/4 and Graphic 23 for 2x3.
Some complain about film flatness as these do not have guide rollers along the film gate as they were not necessary for the older thicker base film of their day.
The newer type are RHxx: 12 for 6cm x6cm (2 1/4 x 2 1/4); 10 for 6cm x 7cm; 8 for 6cm x 9cm; 20 for 220 film; 50 for 70mm film. These do have guide rollers along the film gate due to thinner film base being used, last date of manifacture approximately 1973.
Any roll holder insert having bumps that prevent them from fitting into previous shells can have the bumps filed off so that they will fit without damaging the insert.
RH (rapid advance) roll holders were made in 2x3 and 4x5 versions.

Hey trouble. No problem with this particular combination---YRMV. I've checked the slide in the shell with the insert removed and there seems to be a sufficient margin of "dimensional forgiveness," shall we say, and like I said, there have been no issues with light-struck film. |
