Jane: Try this: From the back of the camera, see if you can open the spring back using your right hand on the right-rear of the camera. It should pull open, and that's where you insert the film holders. I don't believe the ground glass is permanently attached to the camera itself, but rather is mounted in the back. Think about it. If mounted in place of the back, you'd have to take pictures THROUGH the ground glass. I'll bet you just haven't pulled out the back yet. Note, it only opens on the side! Let us know what you find. The back, with the ground glass in it, on that camera, is called the Graflex back. I suspect you already have one, however.
