Yes there is/was/might be look on the back of the rangefinder and you will find a secret door, push in slightly and slide to one side, the door shouldpop out and you will find either some mummified batteries, or if you go to church regularly, a block of wood that keeps the battery door in place when the batteries aren't there.
PS New battery doors run about $35 so keep a close eye on yours.
