Bill:
Move the focus ring as far as it will go
counterclockwise. The button on the face of the
camera is a lock that you use when inserting the
lens. It is under the little "xl" under the viewfinder window. You found it, since you took the lens off. Press the button to unlock the focus ring, and you can turn then the focus ring another sixteenth of a turn. The camera is
ready for the lens to be inserted. When this
position is reached, most focus rings on xl's
have a white line with a red dot that will be at the 10 o'clock position when you are facing the front of the camera. One of my xl's just has a small hole there, for some reason. The mark on the focus ring marks the focus distance. It is also directly over one of the three plastic nubs that move the lens back and forth when you turn the focus ring. The lens mounting tube has three
front-to-back channels that correspond to those three nubs. Each channel has a little pin in
it. Only one of the pins is colored red. That
pin must line up with the mark on the focus
ring. You can also check to see that the focus
distances are on the top of the lens. Line up
the red pin and the mark on the focus ring, and
insert the lens. Turn the focus ring as far as
it goes clockwise. The nubs will move the lens
backwards to the infinity position. Press the
other button (the one on top of the camera) to
index the rangefinder. That's it.
