My recently acquired Cronw Graphic came with a much-abused junk lens with a broken shutter. But I have a nice Kodak Ektar 203 that went smoothly in its' place. So far so good.
But what's all this obscure stuff in the manual about "Infinity Stops."? There are two of them on the rails. Which one should I use? Then can I get a focusing scale for my 203 so I can approximate focus without consuilting the Ground Glass--for viewfinder shooting?
The idea of using the Crown as a 4x5 point-n-shoot has me intrigued and I'd like to try it with the 203 I have on there.
Any help?

Two pairs of stops or one? You really need them in pairs so that when the front standard is snug against one pair it will be parallel to the film plane, i.e., so that you won't have unintended swing.
To set a pair of infinity stops up for a lens, loosen the stops' screws, tighten slide them well forward, tighten their screws, use the focusing knobs to run the bed as far back into the body as it will go, pull the front standard with the lens forward until the lens isn't quite focused at infinity, verify that the rails are as far back as possible, lock the front standard, loosen the stops' screws, slide them back until they hit the standard. Lastly, check to make sure that (a) the two stops are the same distance from the front of the rails, (b) the bed is as far back as it will go, and (c) that the lens will focus to infinity if the bed is racked out a tiny bit.
Then you can move on to adjusting the RF for the lens. |

I'll give the simple answers, and others can fill in the details.
The infinity stops are used in conjunction with the rangefinder. If you do not adjust the rangefinder, you can ignore those stops. In use, you raise those stops (both to keep the lensboard perpendicular to the track). Once the lens board is pulled out to those stops, the rangefinder, if set correctly, provides an easy way to focus.
Chances are the focus scale was for either FL 127mm or 135mm, far from your 203mm. Graflex produced only one scale for 203mm # 30881.27. Good luck in finding that.
You didn't mention whether you have an Anniversary or a Pacemaker Crown. If the latter, and your rangefinder is on the side, it might be possible to adjust your rangefinder to work with that lens. I don't remember the limits of adjustment of that RF but soneone here will tell you once we know which model you have. |
