What is the solonoid thing on the front of the camera for? It has a mechanical connection to the shutter release on the lense but as far as I can tell there are no wires or anything that would indicate that its connected to anything else. I have looked through the Speed FAQ but didn't see anything about it.
Thanks,
Bill

solenoids were used to sync flash bulbs to the shutter in the days when no flash sync was built into the shutter. Shutters with built in flash sync can be synced with a solenoid also. Solenoids can also be used as a remote/electronic release for the shutter.

A 2 cell or 3 cell battery flash and connecting cords are required to do any of these things.
