Install batteries as usual but DO NOT install battery cover.
Set a VOM to DC Amps
Select 100mv or higher range
Connect + lead to the left battery terminal that is visable and the Negetive lead to the right battery terminal visable.
Observe meter, it will show a current flow which will decrease in a few seconds. If current flow is indicated after 10 seconds the circuit is defective and will drain the batteries if left in the camera with the battery cover on.
The camera solenoid will most likely work and all other electronic functions will appear normal unless the circuit is critically bad.
An alternative method of testing would be to sit a 12V lantern bulb on one battery terminal and use a jumper wire from bulb case to the other battery terminal while in total darkness, any glow of the bulb filament is a leak that will run the batteries down. Be sure that the bulb's metal base does not touch the case of the camera.
