The special was a Crown Graphic with a 135 Schneider Xenar, sometimes it was packaged with, believe it or not, a Graflite Jr. (This is a stripped down basic Graflite flash)
Schneider is held in high regard today, but in the 50s Germany was much like Taiwan was in the 80s and 90s... a source of cheap labor.
What was so special about the Crown Special ? The price.
It was around $20 (about 15% of the list price) cheaper than the same camera with an Ektar lens.
Just don't tell the guys over on ebay, most of the time a Crown Special gets about 10-15% more than an Ektar equipped camera. |
