Hi, I just picked up an Auto Graflex 4x5. Is there any new info on converting to a Graflok back. I have heard that some of the photo machinists can convert them, but I would rather do it myself. Also what are the primary differences between this camera and the D's? I tried to look this up before I bought the camera but couldn't find it.Thanks, Michael

The only basic diff between D and Auto. The later Auto's (after about 1909) had the >Speed/Crown type< lens standard and bellows.....on a yoke and guide rails, bodies were interchangable between most models, and on occasion the same bodys were used on both models! The D model had the early type >geared side rails< fixed lens std, w/a spring loaded door on the front!
Check the online RB Graflex manual..(under the >Reflex Help< in the >headings< under Cameras) for photos of the two cameras!
The Graflok conversion is a tougher question to answer....and unless you have a pretty complete machine shop, fabricating one would be a real chore, possible....but some experimentation would be involved, that would make it more difficult! Chances of finding a >Graflex style Graflok< on the market is slim to none...the only source for them these days is Fred Lustig, I have >un-confirmed< info that he fabricates a >NEW< Auto Graflex re-production, complete w/graflok back!! He has undoubtably made some design changes to the mirror location, or altered the location of the backframe to keep the filmplane in the correct position, >if< the rotating back has been retained! Have not seen one of his cameras, cannot do anything but speculate on the alterations, nor can I suggest that he would sell a Graflok back independent of the purchase of the entire camera.....suggest you contact him for specifics!!! Bert
