I'm new at using my Century, and I have one question and one problem with the camera.
Q:
How do I focus on the ground glass? Must I manually hold the shutter open at Bulb?
Prob:
I cannot get my cable to release the shutter. Is this common?
thanks.

Depends on the shutter you have, some did require you to use bulb and hold the lens open.

Does you shutter have a socket for the cable release? Some shutters, notably Supermatic, came originally with a plug that's screwed into the release socket. Is it still in there? It will have a little knurled head and should screw right out. I take it your shutter doesn't have a "T" (time) setting to hold the shutter open?

Graphex shutters have a press focus button; details to follow if applicable to your situation. With the Century shutter, as found on the "base model" Century w/103mm f4.5 Graftar lens, you have to use the "T" setting to hold the diaphragm blades open for focussing.
As for the cable release: make sure that the end of the plunger is filed off square, otherwise a rounded plunger end can slip past the little shutter release lever inside there and actually jam---an annoyance easily remedied as above. |

I have a problem with 3-4 of my release cables slipping past the lever in the Graphex shutter. Maybe I'll try the file method to square off the end! |

Henry -regards the "press focus" button on Graphic shutters I assume this is the small round button - with no other apparent use ? Is it supposed to work "anytime", or do you need to do something specific ?
Or maybe mine is just broken: "T" works OK.
Thanks,

| PMFJI. What to do depends on which shutter you have.
If it is a Kodak Supermatic, cock it, then fire it while holding the press shutter button in. It should open and stay open. To close the shutter, cock again and fire again.
If it is a Wollensak (Rapax, Graphex), just press the press shutter lever and it should open, cocked or not.
"Press" should work at all shutter speeds. |

Thanks Dan - Supermatic it is, and it works as described.
