How can I tell a 90 mm Raptar that functions as a wide angle on 4x5 with coverage, vs. a 101mm Raptar (I think) removed from a 2x3 Busch Pressman C that I really do not expect to cover (except maybe at macro distances).
I sure don't trust eBay decriptions.
It doesn't have to be a 90 mm, that was just recently recommended...I just want to know how to distinguish a 'real' 4x5 wide angle from a 2x3 normal lens...
Thanks

If it is f/4.5 and it ain't an Apo Grandagon, odds are it ain't a wide angle lens for 4x5. Big exception, 75/4.5 Biogon, which neither of us can afford to buy.
Tessars, except for a couple of obscure and rare pre-WWII CZJ f/8s, are not wide angle lenses. Neither are f/6.8 and f/7.7 Dagor types. Why do you think they're so relatively cheap?
If it is inexpensive, odds are it isn't a wide angle lens for 4x5. No exceptions except perhaps f/9.5 and f/12.5 Wollies (these are usually badged Extreme Wide Angle, there's a hint) and maybe f/6.3 and f/9 Weitwinkel Aristostigmats. Perhaps, also, 90/6.8 Wollies and Angulons and the 88/6.8 B&L, but only if you don't want movements.
Wander over to cameraeccentric.com and read the Wolly catalogs. Its much easier to learn what's what and what isn't than to try to find a rule. Seth's listings on eBay are full of errors (lies, I call 'em) but the catalogs he's collected, scanned and posted are very useful.
Buy a copy of A Lens Collector's Vade Mecum and study it. There aren't that may lenses that, um, meet your requirements. |

The only 90mm raptar to stay away from is the f4.5. It looks like it covers on the ground glass but it really doesn't.
The f6.3 f9.5 and f12.5 will all work, gaining movements as the lens gets slower.
The 90mm f6.3 (6.8?) Angulon will work. I know Schneider says it doesn't cover 4x5, but I didn't know that for the 5 years I used it with movements and while the sky got soft I couldn't tell.
I also found the B&L 88mm lens to be very good and it usually goes cheap.
but Dan's right, go to cameracentric and read the catalogs. They have the least amount of puffery. _________________ "In order to invent, you need a good imagination and a lot of junk" Thomas Edison |
