A couple of people have PM'd me and one person posted the question about changing theirs.

Right now Avitars are not activated. But they can be.

Avitars are thumbnail images, animated gifs, and graphics usually under the poster's name to add identity and self expression. ......

which also leads to conflict as sometimes as one's self expression may be anothers insult. We already have a member's signature... "Graflex Corp.was a (silent) supporter of Rain Forest Devastation."

What happens when somebody uses Luke Skywalker as his/her avitar?
Can we have two people to use the same photo of Weegee? If not who gets to used it? Do I choose by seniority, number of posts or split Weegee in half? (okay these are rhetorical questions but you can get the sense of the can of worms this potientially opens up. )

You forgot to ask the question

Again, I say no...

And maybe you can make this a poll, if that is enabled?

No.
Would I object to them if they were? No.

I don't think we need avatars; what I DO think we need is some sort of restricted membership, as yet another pornmonger is on the Speed Graphic forum.
I get a couple of these a month on dateline:London, and by going to restricted membership I'm able to filter them out before they get on the forum. The e-mail addresses submitted are usually a dead giveaway.

Avatars? Damned silly idea, better suited to image-conscious and mindless teenagers than to adult users of fine, well-aged photographic equipment.

I agree with Dan. I have seen them on other forums and they don't add anything to the subject matter.

I, too, vote NO!

Too bad the poll feature doesn't work yet. If you are going to do it, that would really be helpful.

Les, have you tried it yet? It is at the bottom of every New Topic imput page.

This new format is as new to me as it is to you.

I've put in the info, but in the preview mode, the poll doesn't show. I even submited it, but it came up as a regular post. I also haven't figured out the "options" field yet either.

And while I've figured out what "announcement" mode is, I don't know what "sticky" mode is. Does it 'stick' to the top of the forum list?

Alec, from time to time some imbecile or other launches a poll on APUG.org. They're obnoxious, even when I try to pay no attention to them. I vote against them too.

Cheers,

Dan

Okay RTFM is always a good thing, it just took me a few days to find the FM

I think the poll is moot at this point, but at least this old dog found a new trick!

Avatars or avitars, I really don't see the point other than to provide some sort of little ego trip to those who enjoy such things.
