Can anybody fix me up with a manual for how to work this thing? I will be happy to pay copying and mail costs. Thanks. |

Bob,
A search with "polaroid 500" for the key word and "all the terms" selected results in a list with Polaroid 500 the topic of several post. Reading the post directly stating the polaroid 500 in the topic title will get you the basic information you need. I will look thru my stuff for a manual.

The biggest thing a manual won't tell you is that modern Polaroid film is not designed for it. The 500 back used a different system to stop the envelope from coming all the way out. If you aren't careful that is exactly what will happen with today's film in a 500 holder. (Polaroid says it just won't work, and you need to buy a 545i) But if you look around the net or want to wast a sheet of film you can usually figure out when a word or something on the envelope passes the edge of the holder, the film isn't blocked.
A quick instruction with the holder in a cameras is:
Set the lever to Load
insert film until it catches
Pull envelope to proper position
Expose
Push envelope back in
Remove holder from camera
Move lever to Process
pull envelope and film firmly, quickly, and STRAIGHT out.
Wait the proper time
Peel apart film.

I didn't find it necessary to waste even one sheet to use modern type film in my 500. I just held the first packet up beside the open side of the holder, and noted how far the "center of image" mark would have to clear the frame by to have the envelope clear of the image opening. You can't "no-brain" it; you have to pay attention while pulling the envelope *every time*, but for the difference in price between the "obsolete" 500 and a used 545, for no more often than I expect to use Polaroid, it's no big deal.
Beyond that, you set the lever on the back to "Load" to open the rollers while you insert the film and retain the clip so you can retract the envelope for exposure, then to "Process" to release the clip and close the rollers, to you can pull the entire packet through the rollers to spread the developer gel and process. If you want to remove an exposed packet for later processing, or change your mind and don't want to waste a film, you can make sure the envelope is fully inserted, remove the entire holder from the camera, and with the lever set to "Load", move the little nub at the bottom end of the holder to release the clip and allow withdrawing the entire packet without bursting the chemical pod.
