Does anyone have some information on long-throw shutter releases? I've got several old shutters, like the Ilex #5 and the Wollensak Studio #5, that won't operate on the garden variety releases. Thanks.

Some cable releases have adjustable tips so you can change the protrusion of the cable. I'm not sure you will find these new any more; call Midwest and tell them what you want and they may have one in their used pile. Ask for Jim; he is on a road trip right now, but will be back Monday.

A little search ("long throw cable release") goes a long way, so to speak

Gepe makes a pretty long one, and there are some others from Calumet that work well.

One problem, though, with Ilex #5 shutters is that the release mechanism tends to migrate requiring a progressively longer and longer throw with use. A CLA should fix it so that you can use an Ilex #5 with just about any normal cable release.

Ok, I'll try the B&H route, and see if they have anything close. But what about the original releases made by Wollensak for their studio shutters? The cable connection is threaded inside and outside. What type of release fits the outer threaded portion? Was there ever a simple release mechanism as in the Ilex shutters? What about the adapter for a bulb release?

B&H emailed me with three recommendations. I tried them all.
KACRCTL6 and GBCRC10 both fit and trip an Ilex
#5 shutter. GBCRVCL10 will work with your Wollensak Studio #5, as well as the Ilex #5.
I hope that information is of some help.

Thanks for the numbers...

I've mentioned this before, but worth repeating for people who read all this later...

Many of the old shutters get a bit sloppy in the mechanics. I've found that filing the rounded tip off the front of the release helps a whole lot with certain shutters. A fine file, emery cloth, nail file, etc works great. Just extend and lock the release a bit, hold in hand and gently file the tip flat. "Fixed" a couple of my shutters
