HI -

I want to take an Ektar 101 f/4.5 off of the lens board. It appears to be held in with a retaining ring that has three holes in it. Do I use a spanner to do this? The holes are at 12:00, 4:00 and 8:00 - do I just choose two holes for the spanner? (Why three instead of two?) Since I don't actually have a spanner, is there another way to do this?

I've never done this before and am nervous about scratching the rear element.

thanks in advance,
Heller

It sounds like someone has used a mounting flange as a retaining ring. Try griping the shutter and turning counter clockwise (to the left) while holding the three holed mount ring steady or turning it clockwise(to the right) at the same time.
those rubberized jar openers or a strap wrench may be in order also.

I have the 101mm Ektar and my retaining ring has two opposing notches in the ring. No recommendation here because I use new water pump pliers. Very very carefully!!!

I've used a spanner for 5 hole flanges with no problem. You just have to be a little more careful in holding things so it doesn't slip.

As far as turning the lens, would there be any chance of it having an index pin & hole? I have one lens here with that and it would be difficult to turn that lens on the board... I don't know how common that is though?
