As you may recall, I've been working with my father's 4x5 Speed Graphic. As I am becoming comfortable with the mechanics of proper exposure, I'm now trying out the lens movements. I tried some lens lift shots and tilted camera comparison shots and got them back from the processor this week, so I can see what that does.
When would you use the lens tilt? I've been reading about the movements and it seems that a lens which only tilts back would be most useful for focusing on overhangs above one. My most common project use would be to raise the cmaera above a flat horizontal table and to bring that all into focus wouldn't I want a tilt forward feature?

I think when the designed the Speed, they never intended it to have any tilts at all. (now before I lose you, read on)
In it's common position, the camera, unlike a monorail, has no FALL, only rise.
Now in your scenario, you are above a table and need to have every part of , say a standing book. in focus.
If you tilt the camera you'll induce a converging perspective, If you tilt the lens forward only, you'll induce a tilted depth of field, where the top of the book may be infocus but the title will be soft. Stopping down will help, but.....
Now if you grab the struts that lock the bed and move the bed into it's dropped position, then tilt the lens BACK, you'll have effectively created lens fall. Granted, not a lot. but the depth of field will be perpendicular to the table and the perspective will be normal.
several people that back pack with Graphics have successfully reversed the front standard to allow for forward tilt, which is much more useful than rear tilt. |
