Somewhere in the developement of rangefinders it was discovered that focusing movement was linear from infinity to a close distance at which focusing movement became nonlinear. This can be represented by graph with the X axis distance in feet of subject and Y axis distance in mm that rails must move to bring subject into focus. At 4 to 10 feet all lens start the linear movement up to infinity. This will resemble the hypotenuse of a right triangle, hence "The Cam". The moveable mirror of the rangefinder is attached to an arm that rides on the cam and the cam linked to rail movement. ( In older designs the moveable mirror was linked to the focus rails.) While the slope of a 90mm will be different than a 100mm , the linearity will be the same.
Cameras using cam rangefinders are adjusted by setting the infinity of the rangefinder first with the rails at a predetermined position. A special cam for that camera is required to set the infinity point. Once set, each lens is focused at infinity on the GG by moving the lens and setting the stops once infinity is found. The slope of the cam has been determined and it has been machinded, and when installed will cause the rangefinder to track the lens accurately.
I hope this helps.
Charles

What is the best place to go for info about Lenses, cam, rangefinders, infinity stops, etc.? I found articles about making your own cams and an excellent article on adjusting the rangefinder, but is there something that gives a good overview. I don't understand the camming process at all.

I'm putting a 100 mm planar on my Century instead of the 103 graftar. How many adjustment do I need to make?

I'm happy to do the research, but haven't found the right spot yet.

thanks. Everyone's been very helpful with my many tyro questions.
Your camera's rangefinder doesn't have a cam. What you must do is search on this site for directions on how to adjust the Kalart rangefinder (your camera has a rangefinder, doesn't it?) and follow them.

Cheers,

Dan

Great. Simpler is better. I read the article on adjusting the rangefinder. That looks like something I can take on.

The previous cam description helps, too.

thanks.
