|

The Graphic Historical Quarterly (vol 14-4) ran an article on Super Graphic and mentions the use of a two-cell Graflite to activate both flashbulb and shutter solenoid when using a Y-cord.
Is there a reason why the Graflite must be a two (2) cell handle.
Would a three (3) cell handle work also? |

Thanks. I couldn't imagine a reason why it wouldn't. |

If I recall correctly there was some difference between solenoids designed for use with two cell & three cell battery holders that might require adjustment to get one to synchronize correctly when used with the other battery holder. I do know that a solenoid designed for three cells can be adjusted to work with a two cell flash unit.

Interesting. Are you thinking that there might be a difference in the M-synch delay caused by the diffference in number of batteries? I would nave never suspected that. Hmmmm.
Let me ask a semi-related clarifiication question. What I'm thinking of doing is using a flash bulb, in a Graflite,, connected to the Super Graphic using Y-cord. What I think is happening is Graflite's red button will ignite the bulb and trip the solenoid/shutter with the correct M-synch. Is that a correct assumption? |

When I was in the Camera Club in High School (more than 50 years ago) the local newspaper had us intern with the their photographers. One of the news photographers usually used a three cell flash gun with his solenoid equipped Speed Graphic but had to use a two cell one on one occasion when I was interning with him. We had to readjust the solenoid because the lower voltage of the two cell unit resulted in a slightly later opening of the shutter than when the three cell unit was used.
Your assumption is correct IF the solenoid is correctly adjusted for the shutter, flash gun, and the bulbs being used.

Thanks again. I understand how to adjust external solenoids but didn't know that the Super Graphic internal solenoid could be adjusted. I'll do some more homework. |

Sorry, I was not thinking about an internal solenoid. Some one else who is familiar with that particular solenoid will have to advise you. My remarks were for the external solenoids and may or may not be pertinent for your solenoid.

The solenoid in the Supers is fixed and cannot be moved. The cap of the solenoid is adjusted to give a .1 +/- .005 inch travel. The solenoid trips the shutter only.
Set the Graflite electroswitch to 1.
Plug the solenoid plug of the Y cord into the solenoid socket of the Graflite.
Plug the shutter plug of the Y cord into the shutter socket of the Graflite.
Set the shutter synchronizer to the M setting.
Cock the shutter.
Cock the synchronizer if required.
Insert a flash bulb into the Graflite.
Press the red master button on the Graflite when you are ready to make the exposure.

Thanks. I printed the Graflite manual but haven't had time to look at it. I really appreciate that! |
