What are the two clips on the top rear of camera housing used for?

To hold the back on.

The clips I meant were on the top back one on left and one on right. I have a Speed Graphic and a Crown Graphic neither of these have the clips, all pictures of graphicview both early model and the Graphicview2 do? My first thought was to hold the shield on the film holders while taking the picture (don't think so) my second guess was to hold black cloth over ground glass, then why not on the others??

My bad. Shoulda looked before I posted. They are dark cloth clips.

So why not on a Speed / Crown ?

The philosophical answer is Speeds & Crowns are hand held and no respectable press photographer would use a dark cloth. In the rare situation he needs to use the ground glass, the ground glass cover will suffice. The Graphic View shooter could occasionally use the ground glass cover, but he's more interested in sharp corners and checking the movements, so he needs the dark cloth to see into the dark corners.

The Graflex corporate answer is: We had to use clips on the Graphic View to hold the back on, why not design them with an integral dark cloth clip? It's free. Speeds and Crowns don't have the back clip, so it would be an extra cost.
