There is an article in the December 2004 issue of POP Photography about David Burnett using his Speed Graphic. The article says he is using a Super D but the picture looks like a Pacemaker. Some interesting shots of the recent summer Olympics using the Graphic. Apparently, he is using an Aero Ektar 2.5 on the board with Tri-X.
Very cool!!

There are a couple of threads on David Burnett here--

One of the interesting things I've read in one of the articles on Burnett (maybe in _PDN_ or _The Washington Post_) is that he has a Master Tech and prefers the Pacemaker for this work. |

He also has a Super D, but do't know specifics.

Gentlemen,
David Burnett is even a member of this board! He was kind enough to reply to one of those threads (the one simply titled "David Burnett" that Les began).
I just got my copy of the 12/04 PopPhoto yesterday and WOW is all I can say.
He has used cameras of many different kinds and formats, and still loves the Graflex...that tells me something!
If you read this, Mr. Burnett, then just let me say you're my photographic hero!

Yeah, Dave is probably my biggest contemporary photo hero, and not just because he loves his Graflex. I was looking through an issue of Time about a month ago in a waiting room, paying attention to the photos. One finally grabbed me and made me go "Now that is a cool photo." Course, checked out the photo credit and it was one of his.
Since it is related to this thread, here is a 1997 writing by him on his way to shooting sports that I really liked. http://www.zonezero.com/exposiciones/fotografos/burnett/default.html |

I'm kind of unenthusiastic about most sports photos, but those are really great (and they have a real Tri-X look), and so is the article. Thanks for the link. |

well all I can say is, thanks to all of you for such nice commentary. as most of you know, i have been in the business of magazine photography a fairly long time (started as an intern with TIME in 1967.. when the 'old guys' at Time and Life were... oh... 10 or 15 years younger than I am now)... that said.. my great affection for this site has much to do with the wonderful information and sharing which goes on about the Graflex cameras, and .. well, the Graflex "thing". Just to set the record straight:
I spent the year with a pacemaker (somehow this all got screwed up with Pop Photo)... and a178mm/2.5 aero ektar which hasnt yellowed too badly. Its a GREAT lens.. sharp, contrasty, and even good with color if you let it. The pacemaker, which is due back from Ken Ruth at Bald Mtn, in California this week, has taken its share of licks (the camera on a tripod was slammed into by a colleague in vegas during a John Kerry layover..., later a sec. service agent let it fall off a camera bag about 10 inches to a not very carpeted floor.. ) and i have had to have ken re adjust the rangefinder to th elens. It makes for a powerful combo, if youre strong enough to carry it (and i usuaally have a canon 10d, a mamiya 6 or mamiya 7, and a HOlga or two as well). But it sure is fun when it works (rarely!!) I have had my eyes and mind opened up greatly this year, re-imagining what picture taking is all about. One shot with the speed graphic, gents, thats all you get. But getting that one makes it worthwhile. I have been trying to clone new lenses to my Pacemaker bodies.. just bought (dont tell my wife!) a 125mm/1.8 ernostar on an Ermanox... which i cant wait to (dont tell the purists!!) take th elens off the body and mount to a clean pacemaker... and get the lens synched to the RFDR. It is an amazing piece of glass. All the disc overies have made me, i hope a better, and more watchful photographer, and i can recommend to anyone used to using 35mm motorized cams, or a digi, that this is a real TRIP to Photography land (a green coupon!!) Thanks for all your support and interest. You have no idea how much fun it was for me to happen across this little thread.

Hey, thanks for checking in!
Have you tried Grafmatic filmholders? They give you six frames per holder that you can cycle through rapidly, when you need to have that second shot right after the first. With a self-cocking shutter you can burn film at about 1 fps. It's also a compact way to carry a lot of film. |

That's true--fair enough. It's great to see photojournalism that doesn't just follow the trends! |
